Human Relations Performance

Title " The World Spins"

Taking in what class said
1. performing in public space
2. yelling out cards after handing out

Other Suggestions
1. ending could of been longer more sutle
2. know more about god Janus and ideas of Christianity
3. get out of saftey zone have more of an audience
4. more caos

My Thoughts
1. have more steps for class
2. not only am I performing so is the "class"
3. good participation/ human related
4. routine could get more comfortable
5 I could smile with mask on and no one could tell
6. thought the spinning around went well
7. final photo is great and other photos show clarity of idea and action of handing out cards
8. people enjoyed not seeing their card but having visuals of everyone elses
9. no comments on the outfit!!
10. performance looks and feels surreal
11. lacked music/ sound elements like old roman chanting or have me saying/ chanting something

Other Possible Steps to Performance
1. have class pass cards to the left or right and then read aloud
2. have me stand in middle and then have class approach me and pick a card
3. have larger audience with more cards; would take up more time

Performa- Not For Sale: Noise Panel- Write Up

I went to a panel discussion on Noise music at Artist Space on Greene St. in the city. Those paneling were Tony Conrad from University at Buffalo, Branden Joseph from Columbia University, George Lewis also from Columbia, and Arto Lindsay who is an artist (we discussed Arto in the Sonic Measures class).
Mr. Joseph said noise can effect body with accustical shocks and have proper/ inproper sounds. He also stated no sound is bad, that there is racism in music, and there is anti-noise propaganda. He feels we all have to listen. As far as history he he feels alot of minorities brought in music (noise).
George Lewis showed a painting of slaves and talked about slave music/ black noise. He said the blacks were angry and hard to understand. He gave a noise example of drums and a woman yelling from 1960. He feels noise evades, is any sound any where, is dreams hypnotic states, and are sensoriums of modernity. Lewis states noise can interfere with intentional process and noise advertises because it blocks and interferes. We also use human intelligence for sound/ noise, use random noise, and he personally uses computer music.
Tony Conrad says "they're all noise musicians in the 20th century". And that all art is "pop". He says all sound block and disrupt. He feels there is harmonic complexes.
Arto who is a noise musician says most noise poeple can read and write music (except him). He says NYC is noisy, that noise is not neccessarily aggressive, and it is an all encompassing sound. Arto feels noise is a pleasure and that "sound obliterates subjectivity".
I wish there was more examples from the panel, in that they showed more of their work. The panel was interesting especially being in the Sonic Measures class, I felt as though I could truly relate. It was interesting hearing the histories of "noise music" and I learned that music is is noise. My question is what comes next? What happens after all music is noise?

The Yes Men

The swimming in the beginning and end of the movie was different and the color of the water was interesting. Having the Yes Men in the run-down areas doing their web-sites was funny. I found the idea that they could keep a straight face throughout all their skemes amazing
I noticed they did block out some faces of people they interviewed. For the Dow "trick" 300 million people were tuned into the broadcast. The stock dropped and the people of Bhopal were temporarially satisfied. It was really hit or miss that the Yes Men would get a response from their made up web-sites. I am really curious why they were not arrested for fraud. They also would need a camera man which would attract attention.
After the Dow "trick" they were interviewed with their real identities and asked about what they thought about upsetting the people of Bhopal? Whom were the audience they were trying to help. So the Yes Men went to Bhopal and talked to the locals asking the people of India if the "trick" was worth it. Stating " Dow spends more money to clean up its image and no help for the victims".
For the Eexon "trick" the candles were gross and they were eventually told to turn off their movie and leave.
The suits for the Halliburton "trick" were halarious which were called the "Survival Ball". I felt in this "trick" they really fooled the audience. Their keynote was saying that the original speaker cannot show up, which is how they get in.
The fake New York Times must have cost a bunch of money and I think was very different in their plan of attack than their other "tricks". They are stated saying "lets make it happen for real". Again the throw off is having a camera person involved, filming the handing out of the free newspapers.
Over all they do good things for people in need. I'm still not sure if they actually get in trouble, how much of the movie is staged, and if they are actually " fixing the world"? I feel their ideas and concept is very smart and and has a different outlook on how to help those that are just swept under the carpet.
